The History of the Ranch

A Ranch that embodies the spirit of the American West.

For more than 140 years, the land of Four Suns Ranch has been shaped by the dreams and determination of those who called it home. Neighbor Hunter S. Thompson, whose Owl Farm compound just down the road, made this valley a legendary gathering place for writers, artists, and free spirits.

The story begins in 1884.

The land was settled in 1884 by the Collins family, pioneers who recognized the value of the two creeks that crossed their homestead. Though their tale includes heartbreak—marked by a small family cemetery that speaks to the challenges of frontier life—it set the stage for generations of stewardship to come.

Through the years, the land has worn many names.

It was Saint Finnbar Farm under Trudi and Hank Pedersen, where English horsemanship met Danish flower cultivation. Since 1970, under George Stranahan's guidance, it flourished as a cattle operation called Flying Dog Ranch.

Now, a new story is beginning.

Today, water still flows through historic creeks, hay fields wave in mountain breezes, and the stories of all who came before are honored in every acre—a living testament to the enduring spirit of the American West.

With Four Suns Ranch, Ryan and Molly Graves have a vision to create a place to come and reconnect with what's most important to them, while being committed stewards to the land. Learn more about
